Wonderful & Delightful People
After Hurricane Ike had devastated the Galveston Bay area in 2008, I drove around on my Yamaha and took pictures of the devastation. I saw surreal sights such as very large boats sitting on bridges several feet above water level. All the proud and hardy Texas people were in a cleanup and helping their neighbor mode all throughout the region. I saw shrimp boats stacked on top of each other like dominoes, creating lasting hardships on families dependent of the catch of the day. These three men were some of the lucky ones. They were doing some minor repairs for the boat to be seaworthy. This is a testament to the strength of Gulf Coastal Texans.
I was in the US Army during the Cold War in the late 70s and anyone carrying a AK-47 was considered an enemy. Nearly, three decades later, I am on a mission trip to Uganda. The protection detail assigned to us were equipped with AK-47s. I took this pic because of the colors, smiles, and children. But most of all, I saw the irony of one who would have once been my enemy is now there to protect me.
During the Summer 2015, Lake Texoma did something twice it had only done three times in the previous seventy-one years. The Texoma double flood of 2015 caused its tributaries, such as the Red and the Washita rivers to back up. I took this picture just outside of Tishomingo, Oklahoma, where the Washita river flooded over the bridge. For many people floods can be devastating, but for Oklahoma citizens…. well let’s just say, “time to go fishing”.
